Melissa has been teaching for 13 years, 11 of them in an AP World History classroom. She loves World History because it is full of stories about all kinds of different people, and because it shows us how the world around us came to be as it is. Outside the classroom, Melissa is married and has two great kids. She loves to run (slowly, and long distances), read, and cook. She's always looking for good suggestions for books or recipes, so feel free to send them along!

Is Fiveable good for WHAP?
World History is our most popular subject. For 3 years in a row, Fiveable students have reported a pass rate of over 90% on their exams.
How experienced is the teacher with AP World History?
From Melissa: "I teach in a large comprehensive high school in a medium-sized city in the Pacific Northwest. This is my 11th year teaching AP World History (hooray!). I love to talk history content, but I know that lectures aren't everyone's favorite way to learn, so I weave content into skill lessons in order to give my students practice with all of the different kinds of historical thinking and writing skills they need for success on the AP Exam."
Have they taught remote learning and online classes?
From Melissa: "I've been live streaming with Fiveable for a year and a half, and I participated in the Fiveable Community assignments and discussion for AP World History last spring. I have experience teaching live online, participating in online discussion boards, and giving written feedback to digital assignments in a variety of forms. Like all of you, my journey into fully remote learning and online teaching was an abrupt transition last spring, and it continues for me this fall as well. I've learned a lot about what works!"
What about WHAP self-study and homeschool students?
This course covers everything you need to know if you are self-studying AP World. Time management is key! Make a plan each week for how you will manage your time. Set aside time for reading/studying, homework (writing, projects, etc.), as well as outside responsibilities, family time, and self care. Then, stick to your plan!
Is taking WHAP online worth it?
The magic of this course is the community. You will be surrounded by teachers, TAs, and fellow students who all love World History and want to help you succeed. This course is more than live streams, it is access to a wealth of knowledge and support that you may not be able to find anywhere else!
How hard will this AP World History course be?
AP World is a challenge. You will need to read and/or watch videos most days in order to keep up with content, as well as one assignment (written or project-based) each week. There will be many opportunities to ask questions and get help from teachers, and current and former students, so you will have a ton of support as you learn! If you're willing to put in the work, this class will return the benefits!!
