Describe your classroom experience with AP Chemistry.
I've been tutoring or teaching chemistry in some capacity for the past ten years. I loved it the second I was in my own AP Chemistry classroom. I've worked for tutoring centers, my community college, UCB, and science museums. It's so fun seeing students understand chemistry!
What is your experience with remote learning and online classes?
I started doing videos and lessons with students online a few years ago. I loved it, because I got to see a few of my favorite students after they moved to college. Also, I've had the pleasure of teaching with Fiveable for the past year. I did chemistry streams with attendances ranging from 1 to 1,200 students.
What advice do you have for homeschool and self study students?
Be organized. It is so easy to lose material and forget that it even exists. Store your material in notebooks and folders that are clearly labeled. Also, take some time once a week to reorganize things, it will make you feel so much better. Lastly, take hand-written notes. It helps the material stick better.
For students who haven't decided whether taking this course online is worth it, what would you say to them?
Chemistry is so fun. We have the pleasure of learning about what makes stuff (literally things) up. It is a mind-numbing, nerd-filled class. To this day, I still leave my classes wanting to learn more about chemistry and wanting to discuss with my peers and students about how cool atoms are.
How hard will this class be and what can students expect from the workload?
This is a challenging course. Expect to spend a lot of time reading, practicing problems, and watching videos. With that being said, your TAs and I will do our best so that you understand the material and are excited to learn more!
Wes Winter studied chemistry at UC Berkeley after transferring from community college in Southern California. He liked laboratory work, but education was what he truly loved. While at school, he was in the marching band and played the snare drum (GO BEARS!). He loves the outdoors and works with his partner doing field work all over California.
