Describe your classroom experience with teaching AP Biology.
I taught AP Biology in the Chicago suburbs for many years. Since moving to Michigan, my work with AP Biology has been focused on teaching students across the country through Fiveable. I have had so much fun streaming live and interacting with AP Bio students and other teachers as we navigate this new way of teaching and learning.
What is your experience with remote learning and online classes?
I have been teaching online with Fiveable for 1 year. Outside of my work with Fiveable, when schools shut down in March, I spent the rest of the school year teaching my high school students remotely. I created short videos to communicate with them and created new lessons and activities to help them work through new material at home.
What advice do you have for homeschool and self study students?
Make a reasonable schedule and stick to it! Plan a specific amount of time for certain classes and build up from there. Are you taking AP Biology? Start with a small, realistic number, like 20 minutes a day. Use that time to read new material, work on practice problems, or review notes. Form study groups, too! You are not in this alone! Also, take advantage of this unique schedule and do something you normally can't do. Take a walk (without technology . . . leave your phone at home!) and just listen to the world around you. Read more books, too!
For students who haven't decided whether taking this course online is worth it, what would you say to them?
There is nothing to lose in taking this course! You will be able to connect to fantastic teachers and students from across the country who are likely in your similar situation (learning remotely, in-person learning, or hybrid models). This course will challenge you, but also give you a variety of supports as you learn from your regular AP teacher.
How hard will this class be and what can students expect from the workload?
It depends on how much time you commit to it! I plan on creating exciting yet challenging activities and practice problems based on what you are learning from your classroom teacher. You can attend 1 livestream each week, watch review videos from last year, tackle new free response questions, and collaborate with peers on 1 project each month. Ideally you will not be overloaded from this course, as it is meant to be a support to what you are already doing in school.
